Mocs Softball Expected to Shine Again This Season

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) We got softball weather Monday with the high in the 70’s.
Only fitting that UTC softball begins later this week, where the Mocs are expected to shine once again in the Southern Conference.

In 30 years of UTC softball, they’ve won the SoCon regular season title 15 times.
So the Mocs can handle being picked to win it again this year.
Said pitcher Peja Goold:”I think this year yeah. It’s about the same as last year. Target on our back or not, we are going to try our hardest. I feel like we’ll be okay this year.”
Head coach Frank Reed is back for his 24th season.
Said Reed:”I’m old school. I teach the game that way.”
Reporter:”You mentioned you are old school. Give us an example.”
Said

Reed:”I’m not about taking a lot of risks. We do the basic things. Get a run over. Like to score first. Move runners. Drive them in. Sacrifice fly. Bunt. Those type of things.”
Reed likes good pitching too.
Mocs return the reigning SoCon pitcher of the year in Peja Goold.
Said Reed:”We have no excuses as far as pitching goes. We’ve got the staff back from last year. We should be able to put some good numbers up there.”
Mocs did lose home run slugger Kaili Phillips to graduation.
A concern for coach, but not one player.
Said Reed:”You can’t replace those home runs.”
Said Goold:”After this practice I’m feeling quite confident in our hitters. Last two scrimmages we have had, they have been right on the ball. I’m not too worried. Have a lot of contact hitters. They are hitting the ball hard, and that’s all I can ask for. I’m excited.”
Mocs practice can be really exciting on occasion.
Frost Stadium and the Mocs indoor facility is next door to the Chattanooga Zoo.
So some times the neighbors stop by and say high.
Said Reed:”There was a peacock that got into our building one time. And then the monkeys. There was one practice we had heard they had gotten out. We looked out in right field. They were sitting in the bleachers cheering for us.”
