Golden Apple Award: Amy Carter, Heritage Middle School

RINGGOLD, GA (WDEF) – There is plenty of drama in Amy Carter’s class at Heritage Middle School. There is also lots of singing. Her goal is to inspire a love of music and theater. See how she is meeting that goal in tonight’s Golden Apple Award.

“Miss Carter is one of the original, the OG’s of Heritage Middle School. She’s been here since the school open.  She is a phenomenal teacher.  She spends the first half of her year with the chorus kids, and, and getting them ready for all of their, their, concerts,” said Melissa Travillian, the principal at Heritage Middle School.

“And then she turns around in the Spring and starts working on her musicals, her drama with her drama students.  She is just an incredible teacher and has touched so many lives of our Heritage Middle School kids,” said Travillian.

When asked to describe herself, Ms. Carter says, “Amy Carter is a music and drama teacher, mom, wife, friend sister, daughter all the things. Back when I was in high school, I had an amazing music teacher, Becky Walker who is actually still teaching and retiring this year after 47 years in education over in Alabama.  ‘BWak’ made a real impression on me.  And I knew that that’s, what I wanted to do for kids,” said Amy Carter, a music and drama teacher at Heritage Middle School.”

Her daughter Kimi says, “I grew up with both my parents as teachers.  And my mom was my course and Drama teacher.  So,I never got away with anything. But I also got a lot of perks.  She has always been there for me throughout school and throughout my adult life. And has helped me hone in on my craft for music and my passion for music. And yeah, she’s just an amazing educator.”

Amy’s husband Jason chips in, “She is so good at what she does.  She’s passionate about what she does and it and it just shows and and you know the product. But also in just the relationships that she builds so super, super proud of her.”

Amy concludes, “I just really love the idea of giving them a positive experience in middle school.  You know these years aren’t always the easiest or the funnest years of growing up.  And so, if I can give them a positive experience through music and theater.  Something that and I’ve had a lot of kids say Miss Carter your class is my favorite class of the day and that just brings my heart alive. And I just want to give them something good in their lives.”
