What’s Right With Our Schools: Clumpies Howard
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Some Howard High students just turned a class project into the coolest creation in town. News 12’s Timbrel Williams stopped by the kitchen to see how these young chefs cooked up a flavor that’s now the freezers at Clumpies. It’s a tasty and refreshing example of What’s Right With Our Schools.
“Well, the students of Howard High School students are serving up some sweet treats this summer their new flavor is now highlight at the local Clumpies Ice Cream store,” said News 12’s Timbrel Williams.
Winners of this competition spoke about what it meant to them.
“We were so happy knowing that we win we didn’t know we were gonna win.”
“It’s called Guava Coconut—a tropical twist dreamed up by students in Howard’s culinary arts program, and thanks to a partnership with Clumpies Ice Cream, their flavor is now being scooped up by customers citywide,” said Williams.
“Knowing how to properly cut vegetables and meat and organize the fridge is what needs to go there and what cutting boards to use inside,” said Latoria Battle, a Junior at the Howard School.
Howard’s culinary classroom, students are chopping, measuring, and mastering the basics of professional cooking. It’s all part of a hands-on program that’s preparing them.
A Culinary Arts Instructor at Howard, Patrick Kirby, says moments like these are what the program is all about—building confidence, teamwork, and real-world experience.
He explained,” Students I don’t have like to come up to me and tell me what they cook and that’s great I mean, the idea of being a chef is very different, and I appreciate that they are stoked to do our job.”
