Undocumented student bill stalls out in Tennessee Legislature
HIXSON, Tenn. (WDEF) — A group standing in opposition to a controversial bill proposed in part by Senator Bo Watson says it appears to have stalled out in the state legislature.
The bill aimed to deny public education to children based on immigration status.
The bill’s co-sponsor, Representative William Lamberth, has reportedly decided to shelve the bill for the 2025 legislative session.
One statewide campaign opposing the bill supports the notion that ‘education is for all children, no matter where they’re from.’
In a prepared statement, Watson says he still supports the bill.
“I remain firmly committed to Senate Bill 0836 and the principles behind it. This legislation is not about denying any child in Tennessee an education — it is about ensuring that local school districts have the financial resources to adequately support the education of children who are lawfully present in our state.
I respect the House sponsor’s decision to seek further clarification from federal authorities regarding potential fiscal implications. We share the same goal: protecting Tennessee’s ability to prioritize and invest in the education of students here legally.
As Chair of Senate Finance, I plan to continue advocating for fiscal responsibility in public education and throughout state government.”
