Ringgold Woman Pleads to Defrauding Her Own Mother over Fake Cancer Treatments
RINGGOLD, Georgia (WDEF) – A jury found a northwest Georgia woman guilty of lying to her mother about having cancer.
Vickie Long took a plea deal on charges of exploiting an elder, identity fraud, and theft.
Prosecutors say she conned her mother into giving her large sums of money for the made-up cancer treatments.
Once Adult Protective Services intervened, they say Long then took money from her mom’s checking and savings accounts.
The victim lost her home and almost two hundred thousand dollars.
Investigators say she spent most of the money on fentanyl.
She got a 30 year sentence with half of the time in jail.
“If you steal from your elderly mother, you’re not just a criminal — you’re a coward” said District Attorney Clayton M. Fuller.
“This defendant claimed to have cancer, but the truth is, she was the cancer. In this community, we protect our most vulnerable, and we will make sure predators like her pay the price. We’re thankful to Judge Hise for delivering a stiff sentence because criminals need to know…if you prey on the weak in Northwest Georgia, the strong are coming for you.”
