Sterilizing Male Mosquitoes Shows Promise

A recent effort to combat mosquitoes in California appears to be effective. The Greater Los Angeles County VCD started to release sterile males in 2023. It appears that when these males mate with females, the resulting eggs don’t hatch. So far, the pilot program reported an 82% reduction in invasive mosquitoes. The West Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District noted that this was the first time in eight years that the mosquito population went down instead of up, and there were fewer calls complaining about the pests.
