WALKER COUNTY, Ga. (WDEF) —  A code enforcement check in Walker County led to the arrest of a 58-year-old woman on animal cruelty charges.

The case began when a Walker County code enforcement officer responded to a complaint about garbage on a property located at 35 Gentry Road in Chickamauga.

During the inspection, the officer discovered multiple animals living in unsanitary and unsafe conditions.

Animal control officers were called to the scene, where they found 12 dogs and 10 chickens surrounded by feces, urine, debris, and with limited access to clean water.

According to the Walker County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO), several dogs were being kept in poorly ventilated sheds.

Over 40 animals have been removed from the property, which belonged to Renva Sue Gravitt.

Gravitt has been involved in previous incidents, and has a history of code violations involving animals roaming free.

The property has since been condemned by code enforcement.

Gravitt voluntarily surrendered two dogs and all of the chickens to the Walker County Animal Shelter.

The remaining 10 dogs are being held by the court pending case resolution.

Gravitt faces 22 counts of cruelty to animals and 10 counts of failure to maintain responsibility for control of rabies.

If convicted on all charges, Gravitt could face up to 22 years in jail and $22,000 in fines.
