Randall Smith’s Step Grandmother: ‘You think it could never happen to your family’
Chattanooga, TN (WDEF)- Another families hearts break Saturday as a fifth victim from Thursdays shootings succumbs to his wounds.
26 year old U.S. Navy Petty Officer Randall Smith was shot in the stomach, liver and colon according to his grandmother.
The incident happened at the Navy Operational Support Center during the 2nd stop of the shooters rampage.
A vigil to honor the fallen veterans, and ALL veterans, was held at the WalMart in Fort Oglethorpe.
Veterans were on hand and remark on the family that is the military.
"we are brothers in arms, 24 hours a day 7 days a week," said David West, Navy veteran.
As details come out about Randall Smith’s heroic efforts, and the family he left behind, veterans at this vigil feel a bond that transcends time and culture with their fellow American service members who died this week.
"I know that when I served in the Navy and my friend over here I think may share the same thing that we would rather be the ones on the front line before anything happens to our civilians, our family our friends. That’s why we joined, I joined. I suspect and I dare not speak for those but I suspect that was in their heart as well."
