Walker Rocks Park expands with inclusive playground features
ROCK SPRING, Ga. (WDEF) – Big changes are coming to one of Walker County’s most well-loved parks.
This week, construction officially began on the next phase of Walker Rocks Park, located at the Walker County Civic Center.
The new project aims to make the playground even more inclusive and engaging for children of all abilities.
“The sound of progress is in the air,” county officials say, as crews begin expanding the site that opened just last summer.
Joe Legge, Walker County’s Director of Communications and Community Development, says the upgrades are part of the county’s broader effort to invest in outdoor spaces and community wellness.
“What we’re doing is really enhancing the site that we finally got up and operational last summer to add more inclusive features, more ground-level play, and then some other activities—play features that aren’t available in Walker County right now,” Legge said.
The construction area may look a bit messy at the moment, but families can still enjoy the existing playground.
It remains open and fully fenced in to keep kids safe while construction continues nearby.
“This part of the playground will remain open for children to come and play,” said Legge. “We have it barricaded with fencing around it, so it’ll still be operational while construction is happening really just next door.”
Among the new features planned: a rubberized surface that allows wheelchairs and strollers to move more easily, along with expanded sensory and interactive play elements.
These upgrades are designed to make the playground more welcoming for children with different physical and sensory needs.
“There’s also more features where kids are able to actually touch and feel things,” Legge explained. “They’re more auditory, visual, sensory-type play features… like this one right here—they can grab onto something, touch it, play with it, and feel it.”
The park will remain open daily from dawn to dusk.
A pavilion is available for shade and restrooms are on site for visitor convenience.
County officials hope these improvements continue to make Walker Rocks Park a destination where all kids can play, grow, and explore together.
