Wizarding worlds and Laser Tag Collide in Awesome New Tech
CHATTANOOGA, TN – This week on I can solemnly swear that we are up to no good.
As you can imagine my social media feed and streaming ads are filled with some fun and hi-tech things. I came across a kick starter campaign for Wizard Tag wands and I was immediately in. John Fisher and his daughter Callie have invented a new interactive spell that brings your favorite wizarding world to life. They’re early enough in the development phase that what they’ve sent is the fourth version of their prototype. The casing on this loaner is 3d printed but all the features work amazingly well.
So how does this work? John and Callie started out in their corner of North Dakota with the vision of Making Magic Real. While wizard tag takes its inspiration from many famous movies and games, it actually works more like a live interactive video game than I realized when I reached out.
According to Jon “The plan is we’re developing a dashboard right now, which will be on our internet site, and you can track all of your stats. You can do all kinds of other things with it, especially for laser tag venues. That helps them to set up games. It helps them to set defaults on their games, and eventually this will be done on an app too. We just don’t want people tied to their phones while they’re playing the games. The intention is to be in the air, to be immersed in the magic and not looking at your phone, so you won’t really need to know what your scores are. You’ll just want to raise them up.”
” But all of the all of the tracking and scorekeeping is actually being done in the wand, and the wand will upload it to the dashboard. And so you can actually track, your stats on the wand, and you can check your ability scores and it’ll read it out to you,” Says Callie.
There will be a phone app and a dashboard that you can unlock different spells and levels just like any other video game but you don’t have to be immersed in the app. The wand handles everything so you can just go have fun and check your progress later. The wand has an algorithm that tracks your progress and results based on your spell casting proficiency. In the interview they told me their goal was to bring magic to life, and in my opinion they have pulled it off.
Imagine wizard themed laser tag places, game halls at your favorite comic convention and an endless world of possibilities. You don’t have to have a large group, the wand does have a discovery mode so if you’re a concealed carrier in a world of muggles, your wand could potentially detect wizards nearby. Imagine the scene at your local coffee house and suddenly a wizard duel breaks out with full lights and sound. It could happen. The discovery feature can also be turned off for those that want to remain secret wizards.
