9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Marks 11th Year

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Chattanooga hosted the 11th annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, and 3.43 Mile Walk this morning at AT&T Field, located at 201 Power Alley.

The event is part of a series of memorial climbs organized across the United States to recognize the firefighters and first responders who died during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Participants in the stair climb completed 110 flights of stairs inside the stadium, symbolizing the 110 stories of the World Trade Center towers.

Each participant carried a photo of a fallen firefighter, turning the climb into a personal tribute as well as a shared act of remembrance.

For those who did not take part in the stair climb, an alternative option was available in the form of a 3.43 mile walk around the infield.

The distance represented the 343 firefighters who were killed on 9/11, giving attendees another way to participate while keeping the focus on the number of lives lost.

The Chattanooga event drew firefighters, families, and community members from across the region, and it has become a recurring annual tradition in the city.

The stair climb has now been hosted locally for 11 years and continues to serve as a symbolic connection to the first responders who entered the World Trade Center towers on September 11th.
