Training, Fuel, and Focus for IRONMAN

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Preparing for IRONMAN Chattanooga is a year-round commitment for athletes.

The event demands discipline, endurance, and attention to both body and mind.

One athlete, Todd Crandall, explains how the week leading up to the race is about resting more than pushing:

“Race week I do practically nothing other than a couple of very small runs. It’s more mentally preparing because you’ve already done all the physical work to prepare. So race week is usually mental preparation with very minimal physical preparation.”

Nutrition is also a cornerstone of the training process. For some, a plant-based diet is the key to peak performance.

“Nutrition is everything. I am a plant-based guy. I don’t like using the word vegan because people freak out with that. I went plant based just under 10 years ago and at 58 years old, I can guarantee everybody who’s seeing this. Nutrition is the most important thing in training like this,” (Crandall).

Beyond training, IRONMAN athletes also adapt to changes on race day.

This year, the bike course will run through Soddy Daisy instead of North Georgia, offering competitors a dedicated lane for the entire ride.

And while the swim portion of the race may be in question due to conditions, competitors say the heart of IRONMAN is pushing through challenges.

“When a swimming part of the Iron Man gets removed. It is a bit of a buzz kill if you will and I would rather do all three, but I don’t want anybody who’s ever doing one of these to say. Oh I didn’t do the Iron Man because they canceled the swim you did what was required on that day,” (Crandall).

IRONMAN Chattanooga isn’t just a test of endurance, it’s a reflection of preparation, discipline, and adaptability.
