Keith Urban Alters “The Fighter” Lyrics Inspired By Nicole Kidman During Recent Concert

At one of his recent concerts, Keith Urban altered the lyric in his song, “The Fighter,” which was originally inspired by his estranged wife, Nicole Kidman. Urban changed the line, “When they’re tryna get to you, baby I’ll be the fighter,” to “When they’re tryna get to you, Maggie I’ll be your guitar player,” as a tribute to his tourmate and guitarist Maggie Baugh. The lyrical change, captured by Baugh on Instagram, came just days before Billboard confirmed Urban and Kidman’s separation after 19 years of marriage. “Did he just say that,” Baugh captioned the clip, which drew critical replies from fans in the comments. Originally a vow to Kidman about protection and care, Urban’s 2014 hit featured a collaboration with Carrie Underwood, which reached No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at No. 2 on the Hot Country Songs chart. Kidman filed for divorce from Urban on Tuesday (September 30), citing “marital difficulties and irreconcilable differences.” (Billboard)
