Amazon Web Services Outage Causes Smart Beds To Overheat And Malfunction

Monday’s Amazon Web Services outage disrupted Eight Sleep smart mattresses, causing beds to overheat and trap users in upright positions. The AWS failure affected heat controls on the smart beds, leaving customers unable to cool down overheating mattresses. Some owners of the $5,049 Pod 5 Ultra adjustable beds found themselves stuck with mattresses locked in inclined positions designed to reduce snoring and back problems. Eight Sleep CEO Matteo Franceschetti apologized on social media, writing “The AWS outage has impacted some of our users since last night, disrupting their sleep. That is not the experience we want to provide and I want to apologize for it.” The company restored full functionality to all mattresses by 10 p.m. Monday and is working on “outage-proofing” their technology.
