CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Traffic backups aren’t just a local concern in Chattanooga.

The American Transportation Research Institute has been tracking truck data for the last 23 years to find the worst backups in the country.

This year’s top 100 list has two Chattanooga mentions.

The intersection of I 24 and Highway 27 downtown ranks 56th worst in the country.

But that’s an improvement of 9 spaces since last year.

But our top ranking backup is at the I 75 and I 24 verge.

It ranks 28 on the list, which is a whopping 33 spot jump from the 2023-24 list.

The average speed through the infamous construction zone has dropped almost eight miles an hour since the last report.

The worst drive time is around 8:00 AM.

ATRI comes up with the list based on freight truck GPS data.

They say their list is the only one to identify specific choke points in the traffic system.

Tennessee has seven of the worst bottlenecks in the country.

2 in Chattanooga, 2 in Knoxville, and 3 in Nashville.

The worst is where I 24 (from Chattanooga) merges into I 40.

The report says the average peak speed limit there is just 27 mph.

Georgia has 9 spots in the top 100.

All but one are in the Atlanta area.
