Flu Activity Remains Widespread as Cold Weather Continues
Chattanooga, TN(WDEF)- Flu season is beginning to ease across Tennessee and the United States, but health officials say cases remain widespread as colder weather moves in.
Doctors report that this year’s flu season has brought higher-than-normal activity, including more severe cases in some areas. While the overall number of cases is slowly declining, health experts say the risk is still significant.
“Tennessee right now and all around the United States, we were having higher incidents of flu and more severe flu,” said Grace Fulton with CommonSpirit Medical Group.
Cold temperatures can contribute to the spread of illness by pushing people indoors, where close contact makes it easier for germs to circulate. Fulton says taking precautions in cold weather can help reduce the risk.
“Cold weather does increase the incidence of cold and flu, so my advice for people — just the general population — if we’re going to go outside, make sure to dress warm, bundle up, and try to limit your exposure in the cold weather,” Fulton said.
Doctors also emphasize the importance of basic prevention measures. Frequent handwashing, covering coughs, and avoiding close contact with people who are sick remain simple but effective ways to prevent illness.
“Making sure you’re washing your hands, and if you’re out and about and don’t have access to wash your hands, use hand sanitizer, and avoid touching your face — your eyes, nose, and mouth,” Fulton said.
Health officials say while flu activity is starting to trend downward, it’s still important for people to stay cautious as winter continues and flu season remains active nationwide.
