Notre Dame Hoping to Reload After Deep Playoff Run Last Year
Chattanooag-(WDEF) Notre Dame is hoping to live up to that long-time football cliche, they don’t rebuild, they just reload.
In order for the Irish to enjoy another successful campaign this fall, they’ll have to replace several good players.
The greatest season in Irish history ended last year in the state semi-finals with Notre Dame losing 28-19 to Alcoa.
Said head coach Charles Fant,"Our mantra all summer has been nine more points. Let’s do one extra sprint or one extra lift or whatever it is. We’re doing it for those nine points that kept us out of a state championship game."
Said quarterback Alex Darras,"I think we have to use last year as just a stepping stone for us that we just need to keep improving, and that we can play at that next level and make state championship runs every year."
Notre Dame lost a lot of talent from last year as seven players signed college scholarships.
Said Darras,"Seeing us lose a lot of production from last year from my perspective, is obviously not the greatest thing in the world. But we have guys that can step up and do what we need to do."
The Irish will have some experienced guys who should step up, especially on defense.
Said Fant,"We have returning seniors at all levels of defense."
A senior will also man the quarterback position in Alex Darras.
Said Fant,"It’s really nice to have a kid out there who thinks like a coach. He really does. He thinks like a coach. He may not be as pretty as us coaches,(chuckles) but he thinks like a coach."
Talk about a pretty sight for Coach Fant.
That would be Notre Dame’s new region, which includes nothing but local teams.
Said Fant,"The fact that our longest district game is Signal Mountain. Man, you’ve just got to smile about that."
Added linebacker Tyler Enos,"Going out to Bledsoe and Sequatchie and all of that was kind of getting old. It’s kind of out there. Playing all of these local teams is a lot cooler. Lot more games closer to home. Yeah, I like it."
