Dalton murder suspect found with weapons in his jail cell

DALTON, Georgia (WDEF) — A man already awaiting trial for the murder of his wife is now facing more felony charges after weapons were discovered in his jail cell.

David Dyer, 49, of Dalton is an inmate at the Whitfield County Jail who is awaiting his day in court to answer to a laundry list of felony charges, including murder.

But not now the list of felonies is about to increase after jailers found three deadly objects in his holding cell.

"There was a small sharpened tooth brush. There was a sharpened piece of a sprinkler head and a small screw that had been taken with the bottom wrapped with a handle," said Whitfield County Jail Captain Wesley Lynch.

All three sharpened objects are considered deadly weapons in a facility where even the guards are not armed. It’s unclear who the weapons were going to be used on, but authorities are certain it would not have been another inmate.

"This inmate was locked in a cell by himself. He was in 10-0 which we consider high security custody. He didn’t have any access to other inmates. There were no other inmates around for him to protect himself from," Lynch said.

The weapons were found during a routine security sweep of the entire jail; so routine that Lynch said its been a very long time since they have dealt with this type of threat.

"This is not an everyday occurrence so when it does happen we take measures to make sure they don’t need to do this again," Lynch said.

Dyer has been transferred to another high security holding cell where he will be visually monitored.

Dyer Arrived at the jail back in March after Dalton Police arrested him in connection to the death of his wife. According to investigators, Glenda Dyer, 47, died from multiple stab wounds.

A year ago, Dyer was involved in a 3-hour standoff with Dalton Police. When officers finally made entry into his home, they found him passed out in the garage.
