North Georgia special election begins
RINGGOLD, Ga. (WDEF)- Last month, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene officially resigned from her seat in Congress.
Now, the election to determine her replacement is here.
Monday marked the first day of early voting across our North Georgia counties.
Early voters in Walker County like David Currie had a new place to vote on this President’s Day.
Currie said, “I’ve always early voted really just to avoid the waiting in line.”
Walker County is holding their first election in a new space at 3-11 South Main Street, a block down from the main courthouse annex buildings.
Currie said that so far, things from the voter’s perspective were so good.
He said, “It’s nice. It’s new. It’s clean.”
We visited that precinct, which is the only early voting site in Walker County, along with the Westside and Freedom Center precincts in Catoosa County, the only two open there.
At none of the locations we stopped by did we see any line at all.
The majority of our North Georgia counties are involved in this Congressional race, as 22 names are on the ballot.
It is worth noting that four of those candidates, Marty Brown, Jared Craig, Larry Hilley, and Christian Hurd, have dropped out of the race.
The other 18 candidates are still actively campaigning, as the top two will head to a runoff if none reach over 50 percent in the initial vote.
We have profiles of those candidates on our website at wdef dot com.
Currie says the amount of candidates makes this decision harder.
He said, “I think that’s going to be a challenge for us you know because all of the opponents are running on one ballot so we’ll see how it turns out, I hope it all works out.”
Additionally, President Donald Trump will be making a campaign stop in North Georgia this week.
According to the Floyd County Republican Party, he will visit Rome on Thursday to campaign for Clay Fuller, who he has endorsed in this race.
He was last in Rome in May 2024 while campaigning for that year’s presidential election
Also, on the ballot across most of our Georgia viewing is State Senate District 53, as representative Colton Moore is running for the Congressional Seat.
There is an open seat for a Dalton City Council race as well to replace Nicky Lama, also running for the Congressional seat.
Early voting lasts through March 6, as March 10 is election day.
The likely runoff would be held on April 7.
