Boyd Buchanan Tabs Charles Fant as New Head Football Coach
(press release)
Boyd-Buchanan School has announced the hiring of Charles Fant as the new head football coach for the Buccaneers.
“We are thrilled to have Charles Fant lead our Buccaneer football program. Boyd-Buchanan had a terrific applicant pool and several well-qualified candidates,” said Matt Pobieglo, Director of Athletics. “Coach Fant’s passion for Boyd-Buchanan, his ability to pour into our community, his leadership qualities, spiritual mentorship, and proven success on and off the field make him an outstanding selection.”
Fant has been an integral part of the greater Chattanooga and North Georgia football community for more than twenty-five years. He is no stranger to Boyd-Buchanan, having served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the football program for ten seasons. During his tenure, Boyd-Buchanan teams made the TSSAA playoffs all ten seasons, including one semifinal appearance, two state finalist finishes, and a state championship in 2003.
From 2008–2010, Fant coached quarterbacks and the secondary at Ringgold High School before being named head football coach at Notre Dame High School in 2012. During his tenure, he became the all-time winningest football coach in the program’s history with 81 wins and helped more than thirty athletes earn collegiate scholarships.
In 2024, Fant returned to Buccaneer Trail to serve on the staff of legendary coach Gary Rankin. During that time, Boyd-Buchanan won two regular-season region championships and reached the TSSAA Division II-AA state semifinals twice. Fant is also highly regarded statewide, currently serving as Southeast Region Vice President for the Tennessee Football Coaches Association.
“I started my coaching journey in 1998 at Boyd-Buchanan and was fortunate to work with some amazing coaches and mentors,” said Fant. “Through nearly thirty years of experience, I have never worked harder or felt more prepared to lead the Buccaneer football program. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve on Gary Rankin’s staff, and it’s an honor to continue the legacy of BBS football.
“I am eager to continue the work that God is doing on this campus by mentoring our players to become men of faith, dedicated students, and elite athletes ready for the next level.”
Fant is also heavily involved in the community as the board of directors’ chairman for the Distinguished Young Women of Tennessee scholarship program, which promotes and rewards scholastic achievement, leadership, and talent in young women. He and his wife, Traci, have assisted more than 250 young women in receiving college scholarships
