Survivor Inspires Hope Through Story
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – John O’Leary, bestselling author, international keynote speaker, and burn survivor, inspired attendees at the 23rd annual Possibilities Luncheon hosted by Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation.
The event, held at the Chattanooga Convention Center, raises funds for the Siskin Hospital Patient Scholarship Fund, which provides essential rehabilitation care to patients who are uninsured or underinsured following serious injuries or illness.
At just nine years old, O’Leary suffered burns to 100% of his body in a tragic accident involving gasoline and fire.
Doctors gave him less than a 1% chance to survive, and he faced months of hospitalization and numerous surgeries during his long recovery.
Reflecting on his journey, O’Leary shared:
“After I got burned my dream was to be normal not to be a speaker not to have movies made not to be on news 12 I wanted to be ordinary and I did that for about 20 years and then I got called into speaking and I’ve been speaking all over the world 2800 times in 50 states… dozens of countries… but the messages is consistent, that you are precious priceless gift.”
His story is now portrayed in the feature film Soul on Fire, which chronicles his journey from tragedy to triumph.
O’Leary described the film as “a miracle story” that is both redemptive and universal:
“To see a film that it starts off so tragic a little child getting burned and it’s so redemptive it’s a miracle story and what is true in our story is true in our collective stories and if that story soul on fire gives people hope to keep living keep fighting keep praying to keep moving forward then we’ll lay our lives at the ground each day for others.”
Beyond his personal journey, O’Leary emphasizes that everyone has the capacity for hope and resilience. Speaking directly to those facing challenges, he said:
“I think most of us are struggling and some ways that I can’t fathom but I would remind people that there’s always reason for hope there’s always beliefs I think the author of life still works and that miracles still happen.”
O’Leary has delivered his message worldwide, speaking thousands of times across all 50 states and dozens of countries.
His consistent focus is on the inherent value of life and the ways people can overcome even the most difficult circumstances.
Attendees at the luncheon experienced both inspiration and a reminder of the power of community.
The Siskin Hospital Patient Scholarship Fund, supported by events like this, allows patients to receive life-changing rehabilitation care regardless of insurance status, giving hope to those recovering from traumatic injuries or illnesses.
Through his story and his presence, John O’Leary left a lasting impression, reminding everyone in attendance that courage, perseverance, and hope are qualities that can transform lives, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
