Tax Day countdown: Experts urge last-minute filers to act now

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) As the April 15 Tax Day deadline approaches, experts say time is running out for taxpayers who have yet to file.

Financial professionals are urging people to get organized now by gathering all necessary documents, including W-2s and any additional income forms.

“If you’re running a little behind and haven’t done your taxes yet, make sure you have all your documents,” said Ronald with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. “Think about every job you worked — we need those W-2s. If you took money out of a retirement account, you should have those forms too.”

He added that some documents may not arrive in the mail.

“Some companies don’t send tax documents by mail anymore, so you may need to check your email or employee portal,” he said.

Errors like incorrect Social Security numbers or missing forms could slow down refunds and create unnecessary stress.

“One thing to double-check is whose document it is,” Ronald said. “Sometimes parents are managing finances for the household, but a child’s income doesn’t go on your return — those are separate.”

For those who need help, the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga is offering free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, to qualifying individuals. The program provides both in-person and drop-off options to help file federal and state taxes.

“Last year, we saved families about $2.5 million in tax preparation fees because our services are free,” Ronald said. “Instead of paying hundreds of dollars, people can come to us at no cost.”

With just days left before the deadline, experts say taking a few extra minutes to review your return could make all the difference.
