Bridgeport man charged with murder after female found deceased in a burning residence

JACKSON COUNTY — A man has been charged with murder after a female was found deceased in a burning residence.

On April 22, 2026 at approximately 2 p.m. the Bridgeport Fire Department (BFD) was dispatched to a mobile home fire on 6th Street in Bridgeport.

They say the fire department was extinguishing the fire and located a deceased female inside the residence.

The deceased individual was identified as Lisa Russell, age 54, of Bridgeport.

They say it was determined that foul play was involved in the death of Russell and that the residence was intentionally set on fire.

A manhunt ensued for the male occupant of the residence who was unaccounted for.

Investigators later received information from neighbors that the male suspect had been seen on home security cameras in the neighborhood. Another citizen gave information on a recent siting of the male suspect several blocks away, according to the Jackson County Sheriff.

The citizen’s information and assistance led to the apprehension of John Dunagan, age 62, of Bridgeport.

The victim was sent to the Alabama Department Of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.

John Dunagan was arrested and charged with Murder.

Bond has not been set at this time.
