63-year-old male dies in DeKalb County Detention Center custody

DEKALB COUNTY — A 63-year-old man has died in custody at the DeKalb County Detention Center, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO).

They say Wednesday, May 20th, 2026, Corrections Officers within the Dekalb County Detention Center were notified of an unresponsive male inmate, who was identified as Mark Loveless, 63.

Corrections Officers notified Dekalb Ambulance Service and Fort Payne Fire & Rescue and began rendering aid to Loveless until medical personnel arrived on scene.

Loveless was transported to Dekalb Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The decedent’s body was transported to ADFS Huntsville for an autopsy and his family was notified of his death.

Per Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office policy on all in-custody deaths, ALEA was notified and the case will be worked by SBI Investigators, the DCSO said.
