Spain Brings World Cup Focus

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Spain’s national football team is coming to Chattanooga as its training base for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

At Thursday’s Chattanooga Rotary club meeting, former U.S. men’s national team general manager Bill Nuttall, who has FIFA World Cup experience, and sports executive Sean McDaniel joined local organizers to discuss how the opportunity was secured.

Chattanooga’s community was credited with playing a major role in bringing Spain to the city, with strong local support and engagement across Hamilton County.

Mayor Tim Kelly and Mayor Weston Wamp were recognized for their support, along with Baylor School, which was praised for its athletic facilities and effort in helping prepare for the team’s arrival.

Spain’s team will stay at the Embassy Suites downtown, with the hotel reserved exclusively for the squad for safety reasons during its stay.

The discussion also referenced Chattanooga’s history with major soccer events, including a large men’s amateur match in 2015 and past U.S. Women’s World Cup celebrations in the city.

Community events are planned across the region, including “Taste of Spain” at Ross’s Landing from June 19 through June 21, along with World Cup viewing parties.

Residents and businesses are being encouraged to participate by displaying Spanish-themed decorations, welcoming visitors, and supporting related community events.

Chattanooga’s selection reflects its hospitality, sports culture, and ability to host international sporting events.

Spain’s first group match is scheduled for June 15, 2026 against Cape Verde.
