Time Capsule Opens After Decades

DALTON, GA. (WDEF) – Whitfield County officially kicked off its weeklong celebration of America’s 250th anniversary Tuesday by opening a time capsule that had been sealed for 50 years.

The capsule, buried in 1976 during the nation’s bicentennial celebration, was opened at the Whitfield County Courthouse. Community members gathered to get a firsthand look at pieces of local history that had been preserved for generations.

Although many of the contents suffered water damage after decades underground, several items were still recognizable.

Among the artifacts recovered were old rugs, letters, Coca-Cola and Pepsi bottles, coins and a roll of film, providing a glimpse into everyday life in Whitfield County during the 1970s.

County leaders say another time capsule will eventually be placed at the courthouse. It is scheduled to remain sealed until 2074, giving future generations the opportunity to look back on what life was like during America’s 250th anniversary celebration.

Tuesday’s opening marks the first event in a week of celebrations across Whitfield County. A Liberty Tree planting at Rocky Face Ridge is planned for Wednesday.

The largest event of the week will take place Thursday at the Dalton Fairgrounds from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Festivities will include food trucks, family activities, inflatables, games and recognition of Whitfield County and Dalton Public Schools essay contest winners.

Live music begins at 6 p.m. with Grand Funk Railroad headlining the evening, followed by Whitfield County’s first-ever drone show at 9:30 p.m.

The celebration continues Friday with the 250th anniversary parade through downtown Dalton at 10 a.m. and Pops in the Park at Burr Park beginning at 6 p.m.

Events conclude Saturday with the City of Dalton’s Independence Day celebration at the fairgrounds.

All events are free and open to the public, with residents and visitors invited to take part in commemorating America’s 250th anniversary.
