Supermarket Guru Report for September 14th
OK lets start with an ingredient you may never have heard of: fructooligosaccharides. Basically it is a low-calorie, non-digestible carbohydrate that can improve food taste and texture and research published at the Institute of Food Technologists found that it also can aid immunity, bone health and the growth and balance of important bacteria in the digestive track. This is gluten, dairy, soy and lactose free. Rich in protein (from peas) with 10 grams in just a two ounce portion. I find the serving size a bit misleading as they list it as just two ounces – Less than half a box. I prepared this with almond milk (those nutritionals are not included, nor is the 2 tablespoons of vegan spread. Ok what does it taste like? The sauce mix’s aroma is a bit strong and artificial, even though it’s not. The rice flour pasta is best when eaten hot, otherwise it gets a bit filmy. Not for the die hard mac n cheese bunch. Retails for $3.39 for 5 oz. Total Score is 82.
noosa yoghurt lemon is a HIT.
So what does an Aussie culture yogurt taste like? Excellent. The yogurt itself is creamy and has a great flavor – but is more mild and thin than say a Greek yogurt. The lemon flavor is exceptional. I like the different package with the resalable top. Made from milk that is growth hormone free. An 8 oz. package is 14 grams of fat, 30 grams of sugars (which is high) and 14 grams of protein which is great. As any good product that touts being a probiotic should, they list the active cultures right on the label. Retails for $2.99 for 8 oz. Total Score is 86.
Post Honey Bunches of Oats Breakfast Biscuits Chocolate Chip is a HIT.
These biscuits (or cookies) are made with 100% whole grains – that means that 4 of them will deliver 28 grams – that is over 50% of the recommendation for a day. They make a big deal on the package about the chocolate chips – which you can see, but really doesn’t add much flavor. 4 cookies are 230 calories, 9 grams of fat, 5 grams of protein and 12 grams of sugars. They are a little dry, so make sure you have milk or a cup of coffee nearby. Retails for $3.59 for 8.8 oz. (5 packages with 4 biscuits in each). Total Score is 87.
Kissino Pasta Sauce Original Marinara is a HIT.
Kissino stands for Killer Italian Spaghetti Sauce It’s Number One…if you were wondering. The recipe is actually Rocco Casino’s and dates back to the turn of last century. This sauce has a nice rich and fresh taste. No sugars added. No oil added. Just tomatoes, water, wine and spices. Half a cup is just 40 calories, no fat with 2 grams of protein. It does have 420 mg of sodium, although you can’t taste it. One note, I like my sauce a bit thicker – but be assured, this is one terrific pasta sauce. Retails for $6.99 for 24 oz. Total Score is 92.
California Olive Ranch Extra Virgin Olive Oil Miller’s Blend Bold & Peppery is MY PICK OF THE WEEK.
This brand continues to impress. This variety is superb. Fresh aroma. Fresh flavor. This is what olive oil should taste like. I’d put this one up against any import – including the best ones from France. Two outstanding consumer benefits – beyond the fabulous taste – the indents in the side of the bottle make it the perfect bottle to use while cooking and the harvest date on the back of the label instills confidence in the product and brand. Of course it is from California! Retails for $14.99 for 16.9 fl oz. Total Score is 96.
