Chattanooga Fire Department addresses Integra Vistas apartment fire misinformation
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Chattanooga Fire Department is addressing some misinformation surrounding the Integra Vistas apartment fire that began on July 5, 2026.
This comes as they responded to a three-alarm fire in Hixon, which occurred in apartment building 188 and was caused by a lightning strike.
During their response, nearby fire hydrants had low water pressure, which fire crews to extend hoses out to the next water main over a mile away.
The Chattanooga Fire Department has released a statement on this:
“We don’t usually address rumors and social media chatter, but there’s some misinformation circulating in the wake of the three-alarm Integra Vistas apartment fire in Hixson.
As far as fire hydrants, there are private hydrants on the property. The apartment complex is responsible for testing and maintaining those hydrants, not the city. Those hydrants have the capacity to support fighting a small fire, but there was not enough volume to combat the kind of fire the CFD fought on Sunday.
The private hydrants were utilized by the CFD, but due to the size of the fire and the amount of water needed, the decision was made to supplement water supply with the next closest public hydrant, which happened to be a mile away. The public hydrants (Hixson Utility hydrants), which CFD checks twice a year, are the ones that were used on Highway 153. Firefighters quickly laid 6500+ feet of supply line.We also saw a comment where someone mentioned that they were going to personally check a hydrant. That is dangerous and can cause damage to hydrants and water mains if not done properly. Please do not do this.
And lastly, the apartment buildings are sprinkled.
Our thoughts remain with the dozens of families impacted by this fire. We greatly appreciate the community rallying around those affected as they begin to pick up the pieces.”
