The UAW and Volkswagen Meet Once Again
A small group of maintenance workers, 165 employees to be exact, is requesting the vote.
"The UAW is arguing that it should just be the maintenance workers in the facility," said labor attorney Maury Nicely. "And Volkswagen has taken the position that it should be not only the maintenance workers, but all manufacturing employees, all production workers."
The two groups met before the National Labor Relations Board in federal court who will make a decision based on evidence and witness testimony.
Volkswagen told News 12 they want their entire production and maintenance staff, a group of nearly 1000 workers, to have the vote for union representation, that representing a small group within this group is "inappropriate and fractured".
"Volkswagen is very One Team philosophy and separating these into little groups will have different interests and different representatives is counter to that approach," Nicely said.
The UAW says the maintenance workers are more skilled, more trained and paid more so should have separate representation than the rest of production.
