Experts Discuss Possible Heath Risks Caused by LaFayette Fire

LaFayette, GA (WDEF) – After the recent fire at the Barwick Mill Plant in LaFayette, residents are now concerned with threatening health factors caused from the smoke.

Fortunately for those who have concerns, or questions about the aftermath of the fire, the Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR) held a public session.

The session was held at the Walker County Library between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Experts were there to answer any personal questions residents might have, like how breathing smoke from the fire could affect their health.

"We want the community to know what the health affects were for this fire and to get the word out," said ATSDR environmental health scientist, Leann Bing, "We were getting calls in from people being concerned from the fire, seeing the smoke, feeling some health affects from breathing the smoke and we wanted them to know what’s going on."

For those who couldn’t attend the event flyers discussing what the organization has done, and what they plan to do in the future, can be picked up from the library at any time.
