Several Vehicles Damaged by Holtzclaw Avenue Sinkhole

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) – Before Eric Terry could even turn into work Tuesday morning, he was already more than $100 in the hole, all because of a hole on North Holzclaw Avenue.

Terry adds, "The truck in front of me made a big splash. I’m thinking it’s just a puddle. I’m right behind him and heard a big smash."

That big smash was his tire plunging into a sinkhole, then quickly deflating.

We saw three other people in the same situation.

Most had to call a wrecker service.

Terry says, "I thought brand new set of tires, brand new front end alignment, yeah."

Tennessee American Water was called in to investigate a possible water main break underground.

Daphne Kirksey, a manager with Tennessee American Water, says, "On any given day there is a lot of main breaks in the system, but one that causes such a big site on the road, that is pretty unusual."

Road crews spent much of the day in the rain, pumping water out of the hole.

Kirksey adds, "Then they’ll start excavating and determine whether or not it is a main break."

Tennessee American Water officials suggest calling your insurance company first if the sinkhole damaged your car, then call their customer service center to file a claim.

That number is 1-866-736-6420.
