Community Resident Challenges Windstone Sign
It’s a hot discussion that’s not likely to be settled anytime soon.
But a local resident feels so strongly about it–he’s taking on his homeowners association.
Windstone is a gated community on the Georgia/Tennessee line with some 650 upscale homes. It’s built around a championship golf course.
A real estate promotional video takes one on a tour of the community.
Complaints are usually settled at the Homeowners Meetings and seldom, if ever, has a resident felt it necessary to stage a protest demonstration.
But this sign at the entrance was more than Bill Reesor could stand.
BILL REESOR, WINDSTONE COMMUNITY "I came home from a trip and found Happy Holidays on our billboard and I asked them if they would remove that which is offensive to me as a Christian ..at least put Merry Christmas below it."
Reesor’s request was refused.
Windstone residents are a mixed bunch, according to Jim Nelson, the president of the homeowners association.
He didn’t want to appear on camera, but Nelson says he’s actually a "Merry Christmas" person himself.
But he doesn’t feel is right to change the sign. Nelson says the board agreed to mention Christmas decorations, but
Reesor feels the sign could mention Merry Christmas without hurting anyone’s feelings.
BILL REESOR " This is Christmas…its a Christian holiday…It’s not Ramadan ..its not Kwanzaa..and its not Hannukkah. "
Reesor spent part of his rainy afternoon talking with his neighbors who came by to offer support.
BILL REESOR "They refused to change so I’m here to embarrass the board..and to recognize my Savior."
If you think you’ve seen Bill Reesor before—it’s probably because he was part of a group headed by state representative Mike Carter that changed Tennessee’s annexation laws.
After the bill was signed by the Governor last year, no community can be annexed without agreeing to it in a referendum.
