Teen dies after van hits horse drawn buggy

Tennessee Highway Patrol confirms that a 13 year old passenger injured when a car hit a horse drawn buggy yesterday has died.

The accident occurred around 4 pm on Tuesday. 

28 year old Jason Shelton was speeding down Linsdale Road and hit a horse drawn buggy.

The 13 year old was thrown from the buggy and had to be flown to the hospital.

Shelton continued to drive the damaged vehicle until it stopped, and he got out and fled on foot into the woods.

 TWRA and Polk county officials later found him. Officers say he appeared to be drunk.

Shelton is facing several charges including DUI, failure to render aid, and vehicular homicide.
