Dade County Cleans Up Storm Damage

TRENTON, GA.-(WDEF-TV) – The rain is gone, at least for a while– and the blue skies are helping residents of the tri-state area forget the damage done by storms over the last few days.
In Dade county they are not forgetting. Work crews are busy in several locations.
Here’s what they’re working on.

Wind, Ice and Show can damage roadways…but nothing can take one completely out like rushing water.
Like in most communities, streams in Trenton and Dade county can only handle so much run-off, and they were stressed to the limit over the last few days.
This stretch of Newsome Gap Road in Rising Fawn took a big hit.

ALEX CASE, DADE CO. EMS DIRECTOR "It blew out the entire road…and we’ve had to do emergency repairs to get it back open for the residents. There’s a dozen houses past this into a subdivision."

In this case it was run-off from the mountain that destroyed the road…and then filled a pond nearby.

ALEX CASE "The county executive, the commission and our public works we had to make measures to get this replaced as soon as possible."

Dade hired a contractor with bigger equipment to bring in a large pipe to replace an old one that clogged up under that road.
The crew of about 20 people indicted they would work until the job was done in the evening."
The community is called the preserve and there are only two entrances. The Newsome Gap road is one and the other is a 30 minute drive through the New Salem community atop Lookout Mountain, which is out of the way for most people who live there.

And the county is keeping an eye on another mountainous road that may have a big problem later with a mud-slide. .

TED RUMLEY, DADE COUNTY EXECUTIVE "It’s actually on Berkhalter Road going up Lookout Mountain. We had a call there..one of the first calls we had as far as any instance …We thought it was a major slide but when we got there its contained right now ..but it could turn into a big deal.

Rumley says the county has so much road damage from the rains that Berkhalter Gap road is the least of their worries.

There’s no estimate on how much the repair will cost the county.
