Woman sentenced to prison for abusing her 6-year-old child

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia judge has sentenced a woman to four years in prison for blackening her 6-year-old daughter’s eye about six months after she left the girl with bruises on her face and arms.

The Augusta Chronicle reports that Michelle N. Johnson pleaded guilty Friday to cruelty to children for the 2014 incident in which she beat her daughter with a belt. The 29-year-old Johnson was also given six years of probation.

District Attorney Ashley Wright says the Department of Family and Children Services had an open case on that incident when a second call was received in February 2015 about a black eye.

Johnson is expected to undergo mental health treatment and is not allowed to have unsupervised contact with children under 16 while on probation.
