Woman Rescued From Top Story Apartment Fire
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The Chattanooga Fire Department was called to the 1100 block of Grove Street Labor Day morning for an apartment building on fire.
That’s when they found a woman fighting for her life.
“When we arrived on the scene, there was a woman hanging from a top floor window,” says Chattanooga Fire Department spokesperson Lindsey Rogers. “She was yelling and screaming for help. We were able to get a ladder to up that window and safely bring her down that ladder.”
Firefighters immediately searched the large burning building for more people trapped inside. That’s things almost took a turn for the worst.
“We launched a big fire attack,” says Rogers. “At one point, things did get a little dangerous for firefighters inside so we pulled every body out. Things went defensive. Once things were safe again, we were able to get crews back inside to get the fie fully extinguished.”
Unfortunately, all families in the building will be temporarily relocated.
“This entire apartment building has been impacted. About half of it is completely dsotryed by the fire and the other half has sustained smoke and water damage,” says Rogers.
Officials say only one person was taken to the hospital. Her injuries are unknown at this time.
“We don’t know what to do from here. They took her to the hospital so I hope she’s okay,” says the victim’s neighbor Lisa Hinton.
The fire department credits the police and other agencies for their collaboration in assisting this effort.
