Chattanooga State Campuses Become Smoke-Free Starting July 1st

With wine coming to grocery stores in just a few days, there’s also another major change headed to Chatt State.

The community college’s campuses become smoke-free as of Friday July 1st.

It’s a change that’s been 2 years in the making…with the help of the Hamilton County Health Department and Erlanger Health System.

Chattanooga State’s campuses our becoming not only smoke-free, but they will also no longer allow chewing tobacco or vaping.

The Student Government Association started the tobacco-free movement.

“It was their idea. They were visiting other colleges and the other colleges were smoke free campuses. They felt like our should be smoke-free as well, said Dean of Student Life Sandy Rutter.

“We have several students who have allergies to smoke and we have asthmatics. And so we just felt like the students really wanted it and so we felt like it was our duty to stand behind them.”

The smoking  pods and the cigarette dispensers scattered around the campus will be converted into solar charging stations.

So students can charge their electronic devices.

There will be consequences for anyone who may violate the new policy.

“They will be in violation. And just as with other policy violations that comes through the judicial system. They will have due process we will work through them as kindly as we can and as respectfully as we always do.”
