Woman accused of stealing wallet from dead crash victim

SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. (AP) – A Tennessee woman is accused of stealing a wallet from a crash victim who had just died rather than calling 911.

Police in the Nashville suburb of Greenbrier tell news outlets that 26-year-old Brittney McCoy stole several items on July 1 from 67-year-old Ronald Clinard just after he died in a single-vehicle crash outside her home on U.S. Route 41.

McCoy, who appeared in a Robertson County court Tuesday, is charged with burglary, tampering with evidence, theft and credit card fraud.

The victim’s daughter Robin Hawkins tells WTVF-TV that she came across the wreck and was approached by McCoy, who consoled her, offered to buy Hawkins a drink and purchased cigarettes and beer from a nearby convenience store.

Police say McCoy used the victim’s credit card to buy the items.

It’s unclear whether McCoy has an attorney.
