Baylor and McCallie Ready For Their Annual Football Extravaganza
Chattanooga-(WDEF) We get another chapter in the state’s oldest rivalry tonight as Baylor takes on McCallie.
Players and coaches are ready to once again experience this high school football extravaganza.
Said McCallie head coach Ralph Potter-“They spend nine months of the year thinking about what they’re going to do to us, and we spend nine months a year thinking about what we’re going to do to them.”
Reporter-“How hard is it to focus on the game itself with all this other stuff that’s swirling around?”
Said McCallie quarterback Robert Riddle-“It’s a little more difficult than normal because all of my friends keep asking me how are we going to do against Baylor. That’s all they really care about.”
Said Baylor receiver Gunnar Ricketts-“It’s unbelievable. Last year I still remember the whole game from last year. I will remember it for the rest of my life.”
Said Potter-“Sometimes they can become so nervous and so concerned about the outcome of the game.”
Added Baylor linebacker Pierce Collins-“Last year I got my first start in the Baylor-McCallie game. I just remember getting on the field. I was like wow, this is crazy. I was shaking I was so nervous.”
Reporter-“How many flags have you seen so far for Baylor and McCallie?”
Said McCallie defensive back Kendall Watson-“They’re everywhere. I couldn’t even count them all.”
Reporter-“Do you have one?”
Said Watson-“No sir. No sir. It’s just I don’t want to get it cut or anything, so I just decided not to have one.”
Repoter-“How do they get cut?”
Said Ricketts-“Usually it just happens at Wal Mart in the parking lot. Then when somebody parks the car and goes inside, they’ll come back out, and their flag will be gone.”
Reporter-“Home field matter?”
Said Potter-“It may matter more in this game than others, especially now that it’s home and home. I do know for the last two years when we played at Baylor, we didn’t play very well. I don’t think they played very well in 2014 when they were at McCallie, so it might have something to do with it. Let’s hope so. Try to get them to go back to Finley Stadium in 2017.”
Said Baylor head coach Phil Massey-“Two years ago we went over there we sort of embarrassed ourselves. We didn’t play up to our own expectations. I take responsibility as a coach for that. That’s going to have to be our motivation this year is to go out there and try to play a lot better.”
