Event Encourages Students to apply for Manufacturing Jobs

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – It’s Manufacturing Week  in the Volunteer State and to celebrate the the event students at local high schools got a chance to learn about some of the manufacturing happening in Hamilton County.

“They’re high paying, they’re high quality, and more importantly there in high demand.”

Both students already working in the field and others who were interested in learning more were educated about all the various jobs within the field.
Tennessee State Commissioner Randy Boyd said there’s a dire need for more people in manufacturing jobs and he and Governor Bill Haslam want to focus on educating students about why a job in this field may be an option for them.

“This is something that the Governor and I are doing all across the country with factories and students to make sure that students know manufacturing jobs are great jobs. All they have to do is go to a technical college or a community college because of the Tennessee Promise they can do it free of charge.”
Jada Beckett, who is a senior at Tyner High school, said she has been able to get real hands on in experience.

“We started learning about engineering and I realized I actually wanted to be in the engineering field. We get paid just like them. We’re held to the same standards as them, we have to be there on time, clock in and clock out…do everything they do. It’s just been great.”

Both Tyner and Cleveland City high schools already have work based leaning programs that are partnered with Gestamp.
