Hutson files lawsuit against county and deputy who shot him

Deputy Jordan Long-Ross shot 3 suspects over a 3 month period in 2020.

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Ronald Hutson has filed a lawsuit over his shooting by a Hamilton County Deputy in August of 2020.

It happened during a chase in the Boston Branch subdivision where Hutson lived.

Hutson is charged with attempted first-degree murder, felony evading arrest, driving on a revoked license, reckless driving and failure to maintain lane.

At the time, the Sheriff’s Office said deputies tried to pull him over for speeding and driving recklessly.

They say Hutson, who has a long criminal history, tried to run over one of the deputies.

Deputy Jordan Long-Ross was put on leave after the shooting, but later cleared by the Sheriff.

The lawsuit accuses him of using “unreasonable, excessive and potentially deadly force against the plaintiff.”

It says Hutson was permanently disabled by the shooting.

The lawsuit points out “numerous instances” of excessive force by Long-Ross.

Just two months before, he shot another suspect in the arm and then shot and killed another suspect in May.

And it mentions his name-change from “Ross” to “Long-Ross” when he was hired by the county.

The lawsuit also names the county and Sheriff Jim Hammond, specifically.

It blames “Hammond’s lax hiring and unconstitutional tolerance for excessive force and officers who had a history of using it.”

Hutson, himself, has faced dozens of charges over the years.

Most involved drugs, DUI and driving offenses.
