East Tennessee deputies shoot woman in car after two officers run over

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WDEF) – The TBI is investigating an officer involved shooting near Gatlinburg.

Their preliminary report says it started with a chase for a suspect who ran over the foot of a park ranger.

The Ranger pulled the car over for speeding on Highway 441, but then the female driver sped off, running over the officers foot.

Gatlinburg police along with the Park Ranger began the chase, and were joined by Cocke County deputies when the car crossed the county line.

The car eventually pulled into Smoky Mountain Elementary School in Cosby.

Deputies tried to block the vehicle, but the driver rammed the front of a cruiser and drove over a curb and into a field.

Another officer tried to block the car and was hit as he left his vehicle.

When the vehicle kept coming at the downed deputy, other officers opened fire.

The driver was airlifted to the UT Medical Center, but her current condition is unknown.

The injured deputy was also taken to the hospital, treated and released.
