Audit finds UT sports official received golf trips from vendors

NASHVILLE (WDEF) – The Tennessee Comptroller’s Office has found several issues with the University of Tennessee Sports Surface Management department.

The audit found that the director violated university policy by accepting at least two paid trips and entertainment from a vendor.

That vendor had a contract with the University for 3/4 of a million dollars.

In 2016, the vendor paid for air fare, green fees and hotel at the Isle Casino Hotel for the John Deere Classic golf tournament.

And a few months later, he got another golf trip to the East Lake Course in Georgia.

The director also spent a couple of days at the Master’s Tournament, but reimbursed the vendor for the tickets.

However, he didn’t request the time off for the trip.

The audit also found that two current employees also went to the Masters as guests of a potential vendor in 2014.

University policy prohibits employees from accepting gifts valued at more than $75.

The audit also found that the Sports Surface Management department drew restrictive bidding language for a big equipment buy.

Of the four bidders for the job, only one qualified under the restrictions, so they got the contract.

“The University of Tennessee may wish to consider annual or periodic employee training related to its gift acceptance policy,” said Comptroller Justin P. Wilson.

“Officials should not engage in actions which might result in, or create the appearance of, private gain or preferential treatment.”
