Uhorchuk Brothers Have Signal Mountain Climbing State Wrestling Rankings
Signal Mountain, TN-(WDEF-TV) Signal Mountain’s wrestling team is ranked second in the state just a few short weeks away from the state tournament. Despite losing 10 of 14 starters to graduation, the Eagles are flying higher than ever. News 12’s Angela Moryan tells the story of the three brothers that are leading the way.
Said Signal Mountain coach Houston Clements: “I mean, it’s like having three Michael Jordans all on the same roster.”
The Uhorchuk name is well-known atop Signal Mountain. Three of the four brothers brought back state titles last year. The oldest, Daniel, now wrestles for Army after winning state four years straight. The youngest, JoJo, was named middle school *national* champion.
Said freshman Ethan Uhorchuk: “It’s a lot different at my house. There’s bloody noses, blood in the sink. Mom’s yelling.”
Said Junior Caleb Uhorchuk: “We got into a lot of fights when we were younger. It was fun to us I guess, but I don’t think my mom liked it a lot.”
Said 8th grader Jojo Uhorchuk: “We have a mat at home, so we’d all wrestle. Having them all good, just makes you improve every single day. You have to be around them all the time, so it really takes that wrestling family mentality to another level.”
Warrior is in the entire family’s blood. Dad Rob wrestled in high school, and Mom Shannon beat cancer.
Said Ethan: “Being a warrior poet, being good at school, like staying focused on school and sports, my dad throws that in our head every day. That’s what he wants us to be, not just good at sports, but also good at school.”
Said Clements: “They’ve got three workout partners each, all great wrestlers. It’s no wonder they’re so good. It’s fun for me. I get to sit here and watch some of the best matches in the state every day in practice between them.”
The Uhorchuks’ success has been Signal’s success. The Eagles are ranked second in the state.
Said Caleb: “Since we got a new coach, he’s put in the work for us, and he’s made us put in the work. I feel like we’ve worked the hardest we can this year to make sure we have the most success.”
Said Jojo: “No matter what it is, between conditioning or just wrestling, in the weight room. We’re always getting pushed. We’ve got great people around us, great coaches. I think them pushing us every day in the room really makes us successful.”
The Eagles’ eyes are on the biggest prize.
Clements: “Since day one, we’ve had one goal – be a state championship type team. I mean, we’ve done all the things to get there. We just have to put it together at the right time, and I think we’ve got the talent to do it.”
