Golden Apple Award: William Newman, Thrasher Elementary
SIGNAL MOUNTAIN, TN (WDEF) – Making Math and Science fun for young children can be a challenge.William Newman has created a variety of activities to keep his fourth graders engaged throughout the year at Thrasher Elementary. Children can’t wait to come to Mr. Newman’s class each day.
Jeff Paulson is the Principal at Thrasher.
He says, “Mr. Newman is the kind of teacher that every kid deserves. This guy is compassionate. He knows how to teach and he knows his content.”
When asked to describe himself, Mr. Newman says, “Will Newman is saving the world one fourth grader at a time. That’s who Will Newman is. Will Newman loves sports. He loves baseball and football, loves the Atlanta Braves, loves the Dallas Cowboys, and I love working with fourth graders. I was good at teaching children how to play baseball. I liked how they responded to me. I was good at communication with kids and I wanted to do that on more of an academic level.”
He continues, “When I think back of the people that have made the biggest impact on my life, they were teachers. I want students to, to wake up every morning and enjoy coming to school. What I want for these kids is just to become good people, good citizens that give back that are productive. I think that that’s one of the greatest things that you can teach children is, is just being a good person.”
