“I Believe” Teen Moms Seminar Gives Young Mothers Hope

Motherhood is a tough job, but for most teen moms, it can sometimes be a task they must face alone.
"There was a lot of negativity on Facebook. There was all this bad talk about me being pregnant, and it got around to other people before it got around to my mom," said teen mother Syrenthia Bowden, who has a one year old boy.
"When the person that you trust to tell that information, tells you that you aren’t going to be anything, you tend to believe that," added conference organizer Linda Murray Bullard.
Organizers of today’s "I believe" teen mom conference want to make sure these mothers see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Brainerd High School counselor Melissa Brassel says better parents make better children.
"When you are working with them building up their self esteem and helping them achieve their goals, that will break the cycle and help them achieve their education and personal goals."
"What we aim to do is to give them exposure. They have mentors now they didn’t have before when they came," added Bullard.
Too many times, teen mothers are forced to forgo their education and juggle a full-time job just to survive. Bullard and Brassel want to make sure young moms get access to resources that can help them stay on the right track.
"It’s better to stay in school and stick it out and reach those educational goals, because that’s what is going to put you in a higher place in life," explained Brassel.
The mothers know that reaching higher can turn the stigma of unplanned pregnancy into the blessing of motherhood.
"It is a challenge, but you get it done because you have to. You can’t think about just you anymore, you’ve got to think about the baby," said young mother Rozegia Silvers.
"He is a blessing in life, and life changing," added Bowden.
The "I Believe" conference was put together by the 22:6 Teen Moms Club. For more information, click here
