Maryville man charged in January 6 attack on Capitol building

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (WDEF) – A Tennessee man has just been arrested for his role in the breach of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

33 year old Edward Kelley from Maryville was arrested on Thursday in Knoxville on charges of assaulting an officer and damaging the building.

Court documents say he was wearing a gas mask and green tactical helmet in the group of rioters at the Capitol.

The documents say he moved to the scaffolding over the West Front of the Capitol and then got into a fight with a Capitol Police officer.

It says he also pushed and pulled on a metal barricade as he got into the building and used a piece of wood to break a window.

The document says he was the fourth rioter to enger the building through the window.

Then he kicked open a door allowing others to enter the building.

Once inside, he switched from the gas mask to a red, white, and blue medical mask and went into the Rotunda.

It says he spent a total of 40 minutes inside.

Federal prosecutors say they have now charged almost 800 suspects in the case.
