Chattanooga Lookouts Byrd Tenerowicz Became a Fan Favorite
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Chattanooga Lookouts fan favorite Byrd Tenerowicz has flown the coop.
Byrd was called up to the Reds Triple-A team in Louisville Tuesday.
His hot bat earned the promotion, and his style of play earned the adulation of Lookouts fans.
So how did Robbie Tenerowicz become Byrd Tenerowicz.
Well it involves and a buddy and beverages.
Said Tenerowicz:”He started calling me Bert because my real name is Robert. And then one night when we were out. A little intoxicated. Bert kind of sounds like Bird. So the next day I was like dude, were you calling me Bird? He’s like no, but that’s a great nickname. And so I became Bird with an ‘I’ at that point. Then I got the tattoo on my forearm to like further the nickname. Then Marlon Byrd got traded over to the Giants that year or the next year, and he bought me a Marlon Byrd jersey for my birthday. So that’s how I ended up being Byrd with a ‘Y’.”
Reporter:”What do your parents think about it?”
Said Tenerowicz:”They love it.”
Fans love Byrd too.
Said Tenerowicz:”Why do the fans gravitate towards you? I was like I think it’s just the nickname. I think it’s easy to the do the bird wings. I think maybe the long blonde hair helps too and the tattoos. ”
Don’t let the name fool you. Byrd is a baller.
Said Lookouts pitching coach Rob Wooten:”But he’s just a heck of a baseball player, and he plays so hard. You know even if he fails, he’s going to give it his absolute best every single night, and as a coach, that’s all you can ask for.”
And Byrd never gets cheated on a swing.
Said Tenerowicz:”I got cheated from 2016 to 2019 when I wasn’t swinging hard. I didn’t hit a lot of home runs. So I said screw it. Went up to Drive L
ine. They were basically like, you have no bat speed. We are going to teach you how to have some bat speed, and it’s a lot more fun swinging like that so.”
Said Wooten:”He’s a very smart individual. He knows all the data. All the metrics. All the new school technology that we have available to us now, and he used it all. He kind of reformed his swing, and now it’s something that plays.”
This year, Byrd is batting close to .300.
Reporter:”When you get that call to go up to the Reds, will you be Robbie or will you be Byrd?”
Said Tenerowicz:”I’d like to be Byrd. I’d like to stick with that.” (chuckles)
