What’s Right With Our Schools: UTC Tech Symposium

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) – At its most pure, technology should be used to improve our lives. To that end, UTC’s College of Engineering and Computer Science hosts a Technology Symposium.   Bright local minds coming up with innovative solutions are a perfect exampled of What’s Right With Our Schools.

Dr. Daniel Pack is the Dean of the College and Engineering and Computer Science at UTC.

He explains, “This is an annual event that we started in 2017. This is our sixth annual one, and we have to skip 2000 because of the pandemic.”

Berkay Dean is a Senior at UTC.

He says, “We have a headset that records the brain waves, and it takes that, and it classifies that into something where we know whether we’re turning the drone on to lift or turning it off to drop.”

Dr. Pack adds, “The goal of this event is to really give an opportunity for our students to showcase their work, whether it is a senior design capstone course or freshman design course projects, undergraduate or graduate research projects that they are presenting.

He continues, “We are making this event as a community event inviting high school students in from Hamilton County.”

Jerald Arden Freeman says, “I’m a student at STEM, and I came over to UTC for an internship, and I came there to learn more about technology, and how we can implicate that in our community. So, we program this device, and we maintained it and designed it throughout the course of this project, and we just are here to showcase the college and showcase our work to them.”

Dr. Pack concludes, “I want them to come and see Engineering and Computer Science and Technology are really to enhance lives of the people. So, when they are contemplating whether or not they should major a particular major in college, that I would hope that they will see these, and say, “Wow!  I could do something in this field to help the society and make people’s lives better.’ ”
