Southern Fried Fuel

One Middle Tennessee State University professor is driving across the country in his truck on fumes.

Dr. Cliff Ricketts drives a 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit pickup truck that uses no diesel and no gasoline. He is using a biodiesel made from waste animal fat and vegetable oil. Ricketts calls it the Southern fried fuel. The fuel has carried him more than 5-hundred miles before needing to refuel. Ricketts says his passion is to keep the U.S. from using foreign oil. Several students from the University are taking part in the journey to learn more about the process. Abbigail Barlow, MTSU student said, "The most surprising is that we didn’t have to change much with the truck to get it to run off of biodiesel. That’s the big thing like most people think you would have to change the whole truck and we actually didn’t."

Their final destination takes the truck to Seattle, Washington.
